The opposition CPI(M) today called for a dawn to dusk bandh at Englishbazar municipal area in the district headquarters here tomorrow against alleged police action on their party candidates for the coming civic elections and workers.

Trouble was brewing in the Buraburitola area for sometime now over opening of a Trinamool Congress party office and Rumpa Roy, the TMC candidate of ward number 24 of Englishbazar Municipality, had lodged an FIR accusing local CPI(M) supporters of preventing the office to come up.

A police team today reached the area to investigate the matter and was gheraoed by local residents, who claimed that the police were acting on the behest of the Trinamool Congress. Some residents allegedly tried to push some officers during the demonstration.

Soon a large contingent of police personnel led by district Additional Superintendent of Police Abhishek Modi reached the spot and resorted to cane charge to disperse the agitators.

Reacting to the cane charge, large number of CPI(M) activists gheraoed the Englishbazar police station in the evening and started protesting.

District CPI(M) leadership alleged that soon after the demonstration started, the police again resorted to cane charge, injuring three of their candidates - Sutapa Das, Dulal Nandan Chaki and Subhodip Sanyal.

"Our candidates and another supporter have been injured in the cane charge. The police is acting as agents of Trinamool Congress. We called a 12-hour Englishbazar bandh tomorrow to protest against police highhandedness," said Ambar Mitra, district CPI(M) secretary.

District police officers said seven persons were detained from the two incidents.
