CPI(M) today condemned the bomb attack on the central office of Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) in Dhaka allegedly by religious extremists.

"Since the war crimes tribunal started pronouncing verdicts against the fundamentalist forces who had played a treacherous role during the Bangladesh's war of liberation, these forces have taken to violence and anarchy. Attack on the CPB was a part of that conspiracy," the CPI(M) Politburo said in a statement on yesterday's attack.

"A heartening feature is the resistance offered by the people of Bangladesh, particularly its youth, against these attacks by the fundamentalist forces," it said, expressing relief that all top CPB leaders, who were present during the attack, were unhurt.

Expressing solidarity with CPB and all others in that country "who are valiantly resisting the fundamentalist forces and their attack on the secular, democratic polity of Bangladesh," CPI(M) said the Bangladesh government should act firm against the fundamentalist forces responsible for such attacks.

According to media reports, the attack was allegedly carried out by the Hefajote Islam (a grand alliance of religious extremists) and Jamat-e-Islami's armed militants.
