CPI(M) demands steps against erosion

In a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner of Cachar, the district unit of CPI(M) said while the Centre has allocated Rs 260 crore for anti-erosion work to the Assam government this fiscal, no amount from this fund has been sent to Cachar.

Alleging apathy and indifference on the government's part, the memorandum says that funds allotted by New Delhi for flood control measures are never utilised properly and transparently.

The party said that as per estimate hundreds hectares of of land in Sonabarighat area under Sonai constituency, hectares of land under Lakhipur constituency, hundreds hectares under Borkhola constituency, besides various areas under Katigorah and Silchar segments have already been washed away by the river in recent years.

 

CPI(M) has demanded measures for strengthening the dykes and embankments, besides compensation for people who have lost their land and houses.
