The court sent CPI(M) Kannur District Secretariat Member Karayil Rajan to police custody till July 16.

Rajan, already under judicial remand in Ernakulam jail in connection with the case relating to the murder of the Natonal Development Front (NDF) activist Mohammed Fazal in Kannur in 2006, was brought here and produced before the magistrate by the SIT probing the Chandrasekharan murder case.

The SIT had on July 10 formally arrested Rajan in the case, in which he has been accused of helping a member of the gang that killed Chandrasekharan.

The magistrate rejected a plea by Rajan for allowing the presence of his lawyers during the interrogation but said he could meet the lawyer during the police custody period.
