CPI(M) MLA Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami today demanded scrapping of the Statutory Regulatory Order (SRO) issued by the Industries and Commerce Department of Jammu and Kashmir, which allows non-state subjects to participate in bidding for mineral extraction in the state.

"This SRO is bound to deprive livelihood of thousands of labourers associated with quarrying and construction activities... The big contractors from outside the state will get an entry which will grossly undermine the interests of the locals," he said while raising the issue in the Assembly.

He said the provisions of this SRO were not in the interests of public and were bound to escalate construction costs in view of the increased royalty on stone quarrying.

While demanding scrapping of the order, Tarigami wanted constitution of a House committee to examine the matter.

Several other members including few from the BJP and National Conference supported Tarigami's demand.
