In an embarrassment to the ruling CPI(M), one of its MLAs has stoked a controversy by taking part in a function organised by the RSS.

K U Arunan, the party's Irinjalakuda MLA, had inaugurated a book distribution function, organised as part of the first death anniversary of RSS leader P H Shine at Irinjalakuda on Monday.

As the controversy erupted, Arunan, a former college professor, said he was unaware that the function was organised by the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Talking to reporters, Arunan said he regretted his decision and that he was "extremely sad" for being responsible for such a situation.

His participation at the event comes at a time when the BJP has demanded imposition of Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act in Kannur after an RSS worker was hacked to death allegedly by CPI(M) activists in the district on May 12.
