The CPI (M) Chidambaram legislator K Balakrishnan has urged Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam to order a probe by CB-CID police into alleged fiscal irregularities in the Annamalai University.

"I appeal that a CB-CID probe may please be ordered into alleged fiscal irregularities in various departments of Annamalai University," Balakrishnan said in a letter addressed to Panneerselvam.

The Annamalai University was taken over by the state government last year following allegations of irregularities through a legislation in the state assembly.

"Certain recent happenings in the varsity is shocking. During clean up work, Rs.15 lakh cash has been recovered and has been handed over to the police," he pointed out.

Also, documents, files and receipts have been allegedly burnt, he said.

"Such instances are examples of irregularities in the university for a long time."

It is imperative to hold a comprehensive probe into such irregularities, zero in on the guilty and initiate appropriate action against them, he urged.

Also, the services of 450 employees who work for low wages have not been regularised. Their services should be made permanent and salary increased, he said.

He also wanted lowering of fees for students on par with other government educational institutions.
