CPI(M) today submitted a bill in the Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly for the upcoming session seeking to strike down the Constitutional provisions criminalising bovine slaughter in the state.

"I have submitted a Private Member's Bill to the Legislative Assembly Secretariat for revocation of sections 298-A, 298-B, 298-C and 298-D of the Ranbir Penal Code (RPC) which ban slaughter of bovines, sale and consumption of beef in Jammu and Kashmir," CPI(M)'s lone legislator in the state assembly M Y Tarigami said here.

Tarigami said the Constitution of India and the Constitution of Jammu and Kashmir provide for freedom of religion and right to practice any profession to every citizen of the country and state.

"Sections 298-A, 298-B, 298-C and 298-D of RPC, under the classification of offences relating to religion, violate the fundamental rights, freedom and liberty of the citizens of Jammu and Kashmir guaranteed in the Constitution.

"(The sections) amount to unwarranted interference to the inalienable rights of the state subject...And are not constitutionally valid piece of legislation," he said.
