CPI-M's Tamil Nadu unit today urged both the Centre and the state government to take steps to protect the knitwear industry in Tirupur, which is facing serious "economic crisis", in the aftermath of demonetistaion and the implementation of GST.
In a resolution adopted at the party's state executive meeting being held at nearby Tirupur, CPI-M unit Secretary G Ramakrishnan said in addition to the industry, which is providing employment to lakhs of workers, the ancilliary units also have been hit by GST and demonetistaion.
This has led to "serious economic crisis" of the knitwear hub of the country, and the government should take steps to protect the industry, he said.

Seeking to reduce bank interest rates, the resolution also sought providing concession for electricity charges.
The party also condemned the "attack" on a 21-year-old autorickshaw driver, Shahul Hamid of Papanasam in Thanjavur district by keeping him in "illegal police custody" for four days in August, Ramakrishnan said.
Politburo member Prakash Karat, Central Committee members, K Varadarajan, U Vasuki, A Soundararajan and P Sampath are among those attending the two-day meeting.
