P V Srinivas, founding leader of CPI(ML)-Liberation, passed away in the wee hours today at a hospital here following illness, the party said in a statement.
Srinivas breathed his last at around 2:30 AM at the hospital where he was admitted following respiratory problem and tubercular meningitis some weeks ago. He was 77.
Srinivas became CPI(ML)-Liberation's Central Committee member in 1980 and was Politburo member between 1982 and 1988 and from 1997 to 2002, the party said.
Also known as Ganeshan, he was jailed during the Emergency and had led many working-class struggles in parts of Tamil Nadu including in Chennai, it said.
