CPI stages protest to demand for more funds for AP

Members of CPI today staged a demonstration here urging the Central government to fulfil the promises as made in the Andhra Pradesh Re-organisation Act and allocate greater funds for the state.

CPI city secretary Donepudi Shankar, who led the demonstration in front of the All India Radio station in the city, demanded that the Centre must fulfil all its promises, including special status to Andhra Pradesh as incorporated in AP Re-organisation Act, a CPI release said.

Similar protests were staged across Andhra Pradesh as part of the call given by state CPI committee to press for the demands regarding the new state.
 

On the occasion, Shankar demanded from the Centre to provide Rs 20,000 crore assistance for construction of new the capital around Vijayawada-Guntur region, Rs 23,000 as special package to meet the revenue deficit and Rs 5,000 crore for construction of Polavaram irrigation project, that was included as a national project in the Re-organisation Act.

He also said that CPI will intensify the agitation with the support of other left parties.

Protesters were taken into custody by the police after the demonstration, but were released later.
