CPI today urged the Centre to to consider the question of release of the convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case on humanitarian grounds as they have already spent 25 years in jail.

"It is a demand which has been raised by several political parties and several social organisations because the convicts have spent 25 years in prison and the case must be reviewed on humanitarian grounds and they must be released," CPI national secretary D Raja said.

Raja's reaction comes in the wake of media reports that

the Centre has rejected Tamil Nadu Government's plea to the Centre seeking release of the convicts.

Seven persons AG Perarivalan, V Sriharan, Jayakumar, T

Suthendraraja, Robert Payas, Nalini and Ravichandran were convicted in the matter.
