CPI(M) Politburo member Brinda Karat told the media at Narasipatnam, 80km from here, that the proposed mining policy would go "against" the constitutional provisions of protecting the rights of the girijans in scheduled areas.
The policy, once it comes into effect, would not allow the affected people to have a say in giving approval for mining activities. It will also open the doors for foreign companies to undertake mining in protected areas, Karat said.
CPI(M) would strongly oppose bauxite mining in agency areas (adivasi-dominated) of Visakhapatnam district, she said.
Later, she addressed a public meeting at bauxite-rich Jerrala village and assured the locals that her party will continue to fight for their rights.
Karat is on a three-day visit to the district to participate in agitational programmes organised by the district committee of the party.
