CPN-Maoist, the breakaway group of Unified CPN-Maoist, today handed over a protest letter to the Indian embassy here, demanding closure of an Indian relief camp office in eastern Nepal.

The office was established in Biratnagar industrial city in eastern Nepal about five years ago to facilitate supply of relief material to flood-affected people.

A rally of over a hundred people led by CPN-Maoist secretary C P Gajurel, handed over the letter to Indian embassy officials, according to Pampha Bhushal, Politburo member of the party.

In the protest letter, they claimed that the Indian camp office has been operating illegally in Nepal, describing it as an example of "Indian intervention".

"We are in constant touch with Nepalese foreign ministry in this regard," an Indian embassy official said.

Security personnel were mobilised outside the main gate of the embassy when the crowd assembled.

Earlier, the UCPN-led government also had written to the Indian Embassy asking for closure of the Koshi relief camp saying there was no further need to maintain the office.
