Banking on the success of "Crazy Rich Asians", ABC has
started prepping for a comedy inspired by the recently released film, which has gathered momentum as a cultural phenomenon.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the untitled script, which was pitched as 'Lazy Rich Asians', comes from Jessica Gao - who recently bagged an Emmy for "Rick and Morty".
The network has handed out a script-plus-penalty commitment for the show, a single-camera project.
The story revolves around Janet Zhao, a first-generation Chinese-American woman who struggles to set healthy boundaries with her crazy family. Things change for Janet in the wake of her wealthy grandmother's death who has named her the sole inheritor of her will. She is thrown in cold water when she suddenly finds herself as the unwilling new matriarch of the family.
Gao will pen the script and executive produce the CBS Television Studios and Imagine TV effort alongside the latter company's Brian Grazer, Francie Calfo and Samie Kim Falvey.
