National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) Vice Chairman Shashidhar Reddy today sought increasing the number of assembly constituencies in Telangana, saying carving out the new state with the existing number of constituencies could be a threat to political stability.

He met the GoM on bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh seeking an increase in the number of assembly seats in Telangana from 119 to 153.

In a representation to the GoM, Reddy, who is also a MLA from Sanathnagar constituency in Hyderabad, said Telangana will be a small state comprising 10 districts and 119 assembly seats.

"In this emerging scenario, there will be a great onus on public representatives. Increasing the number of seats in the Telangana assembly will go a long way in fulfilling the aspirations of the people," he said.

Similarly, setting up Legislative Council in the state of Telangana should also be a part of the recommendations of the GoM to the Union Cabinet, he added.

"We would like to reiterate that if these steps are not ensured, disillusionment and disappointment can set in fast, which could de-rail the process of undoing past injustices in Telangana, further complicating things, leading to instability," the memorandum further stated.
