Armed criminals today robbed gold ornaments and precious stones worth around Rs 20 lakh from a jewellery shop in a daring daylight attempt in the southern part of the city's Jodhpur Park area.

No one has been arrested in connection with the incident so far and the police have started a look out for four masked persons who barged into the jewellery shop in Jodhpur Park within the limits of Lake Police Station wearing raincoats at around 2.30 PM, a senior officer of Kolkata Police said.

All four persons, wearing anti-pollution masks and holding arms, barged into the shop at 433 Jodhpur Park and overpowered the security guard, he said.

"There were only three staff at the shop at that time. Some of the employees went outside to have lunch and were not that alert. The miscreants held the employees present in the shop at gun point and locked them inside a room. They then decamped with gold ornaments and some precious stones worth around Rs 20 lakh," he said.

During investigation, sleuths found that CCTVs at the shop were not functioning for the last couple of days.

They, however, got hold of a bag where some tools like screw drivers, hacksaws and hammers were found, the officer said.

Initial questioning of the employees revealed the criminals were speaking in Hindi, he said.

"We are looking for CCTV footage from other shops in the area. We are also trying to draw sketches of the criminals going by the description of the shop employees," the officer added.
