The National Crisis Management Committee (NCMC) headed by Cabinet Secretary Ajit Seth today took stock of the flood situation in Nepal and India's preparedness to deal with any eventuality arising from it.

Based on an initial request from Nepalese authorities, three helicopters have been kept on stand-by at Gorakhpur for deployment in emergency.

National Disaster Response Force teams have also been put on alert to join any rescue operations in Nepal if required, a Home Ministry official said.

The flood situation in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar and the heavy rainfall and cloudburst in Uttarakhand was also reviewed by NCMC with the state governments.

In Bihar, NDRF teams have already been moved to the districts which are facing a flood crisis.

Bihar government had recently issued a high alert and ordered evacuation of the low-lying areas close to the Kosi saying that a 10-metre high wall of water was expected to sweep down the river following the release of the waters of the dammed Bhote Kosi in Nepal.

The Bhote Kosi was blocked in Nepal around 120-km north of Kathmandu and 260-km from Birpur on the Indo-Nepal border after a massive landslide loosened huge portions of the mountainside, which fell on the main course of the river and blocked its flow.

The alert was later withdrawn by the state government following an assurance from Nepal that the accumulated water in Bhote Kosi would be released in a regulated manner.
