Acting on a tip-off, the 6th and 50 Battalion personnel of the CRPF raided the Jhitka forest and adjoining villages in West Midnapore district yesterday and seized around 1200 cartridges, 84 detonators and three landmines, DIG CRPF T Kuntia said.

The CRPF personnel dug up the earth and found the cartridges, detonators and landmines which were concealed in polythenes, the DIG said.

The seized cartridges include those of AK-47, INSAS rifles, 9 mm, single barrel, he said.

The searches by the CRPF personnel were also continuing today in the area and also in Lalgarh area of the district, the sources said.

Local police sources suspect Maoists had hidden the arms and ammunition and were trying to regroup to launch attack ahead of Maoist leader Kishenji's death anniversary on November 24.

After the death of Kishenji in an encounter with security forces last year, there has been a lull in Maoist activity in the area.
