CSIR DG chosen for Bangabibhushan award

Samir Brahmachari, noted biophysicist and Director General of Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), has been chosen for Bangabibhushan award of the West Bengal government.

Brahmachari, who is also the Secretary of Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, will be conferred the honour at a function in Kolkata on May 20, officials said.

He pioneered the functional genomics initiative in India and also led the Indian Genome Variation Consortium project as the Director, Institute of Genomics and Integrative Biology, a CSIR institute.

His predecessor R A Mashelkar was a recipient of Maharashtra Bhushan award in 2005.
