Cultivation of Mentha crop on rise in Punjab

The total production of Mentha crop in the form of Oil has touched 2430 MT in Punjab during the Year 2014-15.

Total average yield of the crop is 183 Kg per hectare and total area under Mentha crop is 13277 hectare in the state.

Disclosing this here today, an official spokesperson of the Horticulture Department said that the cultivation of Mentha, which among others was being projected by the state Agricultural Department as an alternative to wheat and paddy crop, is on the rise.

He said that many farmers have switched over to the Mentha crop as it is ensuring more income per acre as compared to the wheat.
 

He said that in Moga 4100 hectare area was under its cultivation and yield was 202 Kg per hectare while production was 828 MT in terms of Oil.

In district Jalandhar 2915 hectare area has been covered with yield of 181 Kg per hectare.

Similarly, in Ferozepur 2106 hectare area was under mentha production with 164 Kg yield per hectare and Oil production to the tune of 370 MTs.
