Cultural tolerance and respect for women should be the key in educational models, HRD Minister Smriti Irani today said while strongly favouring imparting education that inculcates values and develops good character among students.

"Today, as we impart education, values are being left behind. Education should be such that it inculcates ethics and develops a strong character," she said participating at an event organised by Ramakrishna Mission here.

Noting that education and culture should go hand in hand, she said education should also develop sound principles in children, including respect for women.

"Cultural tolerance and respect for women should be the key in educational models," she said.

She said parents should also be involved in the 'Awakened Citizen programme' that is being implemented by the schools using their own teaching resources. Ramkrishna Mission is organising the programme.
