CPI today asked Karnataka and Tamil Nadu governments to take measures to curb the violence that has erupted in the two states over Cauvery river water sharing row and settle the issue through talks.
Noting that rivers are "part and parcel of national assets", the party alleged that "absence" of a national policy on rivers and sharing of water with mutual understanding have often led to "chauvinistic" agitations.
"Both the governments must take measures to curb violence and to ensure safety of the people irrespective of which state they belong to. Normalcy should be restored at the earliest and through talks the two governments should settle the issue," it said in a statement.
"While condemning the violence strongly, the party appeals to the people of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka not to resort to violent agitations," it said.
The Supreme Court had on September 5 ordered Karnataka to release 15,000 cusec of Cauvery water per day to Tamil Nadu for a period of 10 days to ameliorate the plight of the farmers there.
The decision triggered protests in Karnataka, especially in Mandya district, the hotbed of Cauvery politics.
However, after the Karnataka government sought a review of this order, the apex court on September 12 directed the state to release 12,000 cusec per day to Tamil Nadu until September 20.
