Customs official gets one-year jail in wealth case

A customs official has been sentenced to one year rigorous imprisonment by a special CBI court here in a disproportionate assets case.

Additional Special Judge for CBI cases Meenakumari held Customs department Appraiser M V Swaminathan guilty of acquiring assets valued at Rs 22.27 lakh which were disproportionate to his known sources of income in 2008, a CBI release said here today.

Ordering confiscation of the disproportionate assets, the judge also imposed a fine of Rs 40,000 on the official.

The Anti-Corruption wing of CBI had registered a case against Swaminathan charging him with acquiring the assets in his name and that of his father-in-law while functioning as Appraiser in the department between January and September, 2008.
 

The assets were valued at Rs 22.27 lakh, which were disproportionate to his known sources of income, it said.

After investigation, a chargesheet was filed by CBI against Swaminathan under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
