Customs official sentenced to two years RI

A CBI court here today sentenced a Customs official to two years Rigorous Imprisonment (RI) in a disproportionate assets case and ordered the attachment of his properties.

Following allegations that B Pugazhenthi, Superintendent of Customs here had acquired assets disproportionate to his known source of income, the anti-corruption branch of CBI registered a case.

The investigation revealed that during the check period from January 2004 to November 2009, he had acquired assets disproportionate to known sources of income, both movable and immovable, to the tune of Rs 89.72 lakh both in his name and that of his family members, an official release said.
 

He had also incurred an expenditure of Rs 45.80 lakh as against his total income of Rs 70.91 lakh.

The value of disproportionate assets held by him against his known sources of income was Rs 64.62 lakh. The court also slapped a fine of Rs 20,000 on him.
