Opposing the framing of charges against Bhanot in the case, senior advocate Ramesh Gupta alleged that the investigating officer (IO) of the case was "biased" against his client.

"I have no grudge against the IO that he was biased against me. But, it was expected of him to be fair in the probe.

"The bid of MSL was a manipulated document and it was IO's duty to minutely go through and investigate it," he argued.

The CBI had said in its charge sheet that sacked CWG OC chairman Suresh Kalmadi, a key accused in the case, and his other associates had decided to award the contract to Swiss Timing Omega even before the tender was floated for it and the terms were changed after its issuance to help the firm win it.

It had added that Kalmadi and his associates rejected the Spanish firm MSL's much lower bid of Rs 62 crore and awarded the contract to Swiss Timing Omega, causing a loss of over Rs 90 crore to the exchequer.

Swiss Timing's bid was accepted despite a 2:2 split in the evaluation committee, the CBI investigation had revealed.

Gupta also opposed the framing of charges against Bhanot arguing that he was not involved in the bidding process.
