Cyclone: East Godavari admin to meet tomorrow to check

A special meeting of the East Godavari district officials will be held at Kakinada tomorrow to take stock of preparedness for cyclonic storm 'Hudhud' which is expected to hit Andhra Pradesh coast by October 12.

"The meeting will discuss the situation in view of the cyclone 'Hudhud', which is situated 80 kms from Port Blair, and to chalk out strategy to prevent damage," East Godavari District Collector Neetu Prasad said in a statement.

The cyclone will cross Kalingapatnam (in Srikakulam district) and Gopalpur (in Odisha district) on October 12, according to Met office reports.

"The meeting will discuss the measures to be initiated during the crossing of the cyclone between Kalingapatnam and Gopalpur. Officials concerned of all departments have been alerted in the view of the threat to the district due to the cyclone," the collector said.
 

As per Met reports, "very severe cyclonic storm" is likely to hit Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coast by October 12 and unleash heavy rainfall and gusty winds with speed up to 155 kmph.

'Hudhud' has crossed the area between Port Blair and Long Island of the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago today, with winds gusting at 67 kmph.

The district administration has directed the officials concerned to commence works in the district on October 10 and keep ready medical kits, monitor irrigation tanks, prepare shelters in case people need to be evacuated.

Fishermen have been directed not to venture into sea due to rough weather, the collector said.
