: The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) is involved in assessing the damage caused by cyclone Gaja to agricultural holdings of about one lakh hectare and develop a suitable plan for their restoration, Vice-Chancellor of the varsity Dr N Kumar said Thursday.
A three-member team has been deputed for firsthand assessment of the destruction caused to plantations and a report on it would be submitted to Tamil Nadu secretary to agriculture, Kumar who assumed office as the Vice-Chancellor a couple of days ago told reporters here.
Based on the report, a strategy would be worked out along with the state department of agriculture to take relief measures, he said.
Referring to large-scale devastation of coconut trees in the cyclone, Kumar said the uprooted trees can be replanted and revived provided they were below three years old.
For this purpose, he said, the cost would be high.
He said the university has 10,000 saplings of coconut trees which would be supplied free of cost to the farmers in distress in the wake of the cyclone.
"My aim is to facilitate successful implementation of all government schemes for achieving sustained increase in food production and make agriculture a profitable venture for farmers," Kumar added.
