A dacoit, who struck at a jeweller's house and hacked his brother to death, was killed "in self defence" by the other members of the house in Sonia Vihar in northeast Delhi early today.

The dacoit, who is yet to be identified, entered the house of Shivaji, a jeweller, early today and hacked Shivaji's brother, Chitaranjan to death with an axe on the first floor.

He then went down, and when he tried to break open the jewellery shop, the jeweller and his brother-in-law Raj Kumar confronted him, a senior police officer said.

The dacoit used the axe to ward them off, even as Shivaji's another brother Devender came to their support. The trio thrashed him badly, killing him in "self defence", the officer said.

Shivaji and Raj Kumar were injured in the attack and admitted to a hospital. Later, the body of Chitaranjan was found on the first floor of the house.

The dacoit, around 35 years of age, is believed to have entered the house scaling the sewerpipe of the two storey building, the officer said, adding, he was already dead when the police came.
