Dalit community protests after man dies in judicial custody

Members of a Dalit community today protested over the death of a man in judicial custody in Amreli district of Gujarat.

Police said the body of the deceased, Jignesh Sondarva (29), has been sent to Bhavnagar forensic science laboratory for autopsy.

Members of the Dalit community to which he belonged gathered outside the laboratory and questioned delay in sending the body for autopsy, police said.

Sondarva died at Amreli civil hospital today morning.

District superintendent of police Jigdesh Patel said that Sondarva had been arrested under the Prohibition Act from Dungar in Rajula tehsil, and sent to Amreli sub-jail in judicial custody on June 12.
 

"While in judicial custody, he developed some health complications and was taken to the civil hospital thrice. He died today morning," the officer said.
