The Dalit Sena, affiliated to BJP ally Lok Janshakti Party (LJP), lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi today for the government's "historic" decision to bring a bill to overturn a Supreme Court order on a law on atrocities against Dalits and tribals.
It had earlier threatened to join the proposed countrywide protests of Dalit groups on August 9.
Dalit Sena president and Lok Sabha member Ramchandra Paswan heaped praise on Modi for the decision to introduce the bill.
He also praised LJP president and Union minister Ram Vilas Paswan for consistently taking up the issue.
The apex court, in its March 20 order, had introduced several safeguards in the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Dalit groups and leaders like Paswan had claimed that the Supreme Court judgment had diluted the law and made it toothless.
