Dalit woman thrashed for fetching water from hand pump

A Dalit woman was allegedly thrashed and insulted by two persons when she had gone to fetch water from a public hand pump in Shamli district, police said today.

The incident took place in Gangetu village at Kandhla area yesterday when Ramo Devi (55) was fetching water from a hand pump and she was thrashed and insulted by two brothers, Tensin Qureshi and Mohsin, who also made casteist remarks against her, police said.

Following her complaint, a case was registered under IPC Sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt) and 506 (criminal intimidation) and sections of SC and ST Act, they said.
 

Tehsin has been arrested while Mohsin is on the run, they added.
