The 101st birthday of Tenzing Norgay, who along with Edmund Hillary reached the summit of the Mount Everest first in the world, was celebrated here today.

Several functions were organised in the hill city to pay tribute to Norgay, born Namgyal Wangdi, who climbed the Mount Everest along with a New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary in 1953.

Speaking at a function Norgay's son Jamling Norgay said that his father's feat had not been properly acknowledged and honoured by the Centre.

Norgay, who was awarded Padma Bhusan in 1959, received several medals and awards by England and Nepal.

He died at the age of 71 in 1968.
