Senior journalist-turned politician Swapan Dasgupta, who was nominated as a Rajya Sabha member last month, has resigned as a director of the infrastructure giant Larsen & Toubro.

"Swapan Dasgupta, Nominee of the Administrator of The Specified Undertaking of The Unit Trust of India, has resigned as Director of the Company," Larsen & Toubro said in a BSE filing today.

The resignation is effective from May 15, 2016, the company said.

Gupta had joined on the board of director of the company as a nominee of the The Administrator of the Specified Undertaking of the Unit Trust of India (SUUTI), replacing A K Jain.

SUUTI has nominated Dasgupta in place of A K Jain, as a director on the Board of the Company.

President Pranab Mukherjee last month nominated Dasgupta to the Upper House following a recommendation of the Narendra Modi government.

Swapan Dasgupta is a senior journalist and has held different editorial posts at The Statesman, The Times of India and India Today besides others.

Sixty-year-old Dasgupta, a known BJP sympathiser, was awarded with Padma Bhushan last year.

He regularly appears in political debates in electronic media, mostly arguing for the Modi government.
