Prohibitory orders were clamped in the trouble-hit areas of Kalyanpur and Juhi police stations here today after a clash between two communities during a Muharram procession, a district administration official said.

District Magistrate Kanpur Surendra Singh told PTI that section 144 of Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) has been imposed prohibiting unlawful assembly of people and carrying of weapons, in order to restore normalcy.

A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into incidents of violence and arson, he said.

Tension gripped the Parampurva area after six people were injured yesterday in a clash during a Muharram procession.

The incident occurred when the procession deviated from its pre-determined route and members of another community responded by hurling stones, officials said.

Singh said the Muharram procession as well as the Durga idol immersion concluded last night itself under heavy police security.

Two cars and four motorcycles were also set ablaze during yesterday's clash and police had to use batons to control the situation.

Four companies (around 400 personnel) of the Provincial Armed Constabulary (PAC) and a company of the Rapid Action Force (RAF) were deployed in the area yesterday to maintain peace.
