Commercial establishments, including shops, today remained closed here as the holy city observed a day-long bandh peacefully to mark the 30th anniversary of Operation Bluestar.

The bandh which was called by radical outfit Dal Khalsa passed off peacefully, a senior police officer said.

Around 1,500 personnel of anti-riot police were deployed in several places in Amritsar in the wake of the bandh, police said.

Roads and streets wore deserted look in the holy city even as police detained Dal Khalsa spokesman Kanwarpal Singh along with several other activists as a precautionary measure, they said.

In June, 1984, more than 1,000 people were killed in Operation Bluestar, the raid on Sikhism's holiest shrine to flush out Sikh extremists led by Jarnail Singh Bhindrawale from the Golden Temple. Bhindrawale and his associates were killed in the operation.
