Press Trust of India New Delhi
Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) Chief Swati Maliwal today met Union Women and Child Development Minister Maneka Gandhi to seek support for a nationwide campaign against sexual violence.

Gandhi assured support to the "Rape Roko" campaign, a DCW initiative.

The minister informed that she is in the process of setting up specialised forensic labs which shall exclusively deal with cases of sexual assault against women and children, a statement issued by the women's panel.

Maliwal lauded this step by the minister and stated that long pendency in forensic labs often result in extensive delays in rape trials.

She further stated that Delhi Government Forensic Lab has informed the Commission that it has reduced its pendency to half.

Also they have informed that the reports for the new cases that come up are created within two months.

"However, setting up exclusive forensic labs to deal with sexual assault cases will help in faster rape trials. We will have to create systems to ensure that rape cases are tried within six months. Setting up exclusive forensic labs for sexual assault cases would be a step in that direction," the statement said.

Maliwal, who has been on a 'satyagraha' demanding death penalty for those who rape children.
