A 10-member DCW delegation, led Chairperson Barkha Singh presented a memorandum registering their protest against the alleged "callous, complacent, negligent and high handed attitude" of the station head officer, a DCW statement said.
The DCW members alleged the SHO had released Hari Ram alias Pehlwan of Ram J J Camp in Nanakpura from the police station, who had allegedly sexually molested the 10-year-old girl hailing from a poor schedule caste family.
Singh termed the SHO's decision as "arbitrary and uncalled for attitude of police" for allowing the accused go from the police station on September 20 without producing him before the court.
"If the custodians of law, on whom lies the sole responsibility to protect the dignity and modesty of the women, take the partial view of sensitive issues of sexual molestation of adolescent girls in favour of the accused then one can imagine what will be the fate of the women community which is considered to be the most vulnerable section of our society," she said.
The DCW Chairperson said she was "extremely sorry" to say that instead of booking the accused under the act of attempt to rape, the SHO preferred to charge him under milder section of law.
"This clearly gives an impression that the accused have been allegedly helped at all costs," she said.
Singh demanded stringent action against the erring police officials and fresh registration of FIR under Section 376 (attempt to rape) of IPC against the accused.
The Police Commissioner assured Singh of all possible legal action against the erring officials if they were found guilty and provision of security to the victim and her family at the earliest, the statement said.
