The Law Commission has so far received over 15,000 responses to its questionnaire on the Uniform Civil Code and amid demands for more time, today decided to extend the deadline to submit the feedback by a month.

The Commission said, keeping in mind the "overwhelming response" from the people and various stakeholders, the continuous inflow of replies, and requests by some seeking extension of time for more deliberations, it is extending the November 21 deadline by another 30 days to December 21.

On October 7, the law panel had floated the document with 16 questions, including the one dealing with 'triple talaq'.

Should the practice of triple talaq be abolished, retained or retained with suitable amendments; and whether a uniform civil code should be optional are among queries by the commission.

Seeking to widen its consultation on the contentious issue, it had also asked political parties recognised by the Election Commission to respond to the questions.
