At least 274 people have been killed and over two million affected in massive flooding triggered by heavy monsoon rains in Pakistan, officials said today.

The rains lashed vast areas of the country last week and have since stopped, but the floods triggered by the heavy showers are still out of control.

Reema Zubari of National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) said in a statement that 194 people have been killed in Punjab, 66 in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and another 14 in Gilgit-Baltistan region.

Over 2 million, majority of them in Punjab, were also affected by the floods.

The water levels in the Chenab river are high and are raging down from central to south Punjab, leaving a trail of devastation.

The city of Multan has been saved from flooding after officials created several breaches in the protective embankments to divert the floods.

After Punjab, the southern province of Sindh is likley to be affected by floods by the weekend.
