A 45-year-old debt-ridden farmer allegedly committed suicide by consuming poison at Manusran village here, police said today.

Harmit Singh consumed pesticide yesterday after he got to know that the land he had mortgaged for a loan was going to be sold, police said, adding, he was rushed to a hospital where he died during treatment.

In his complaint, Ishpreet Singh, son of the deceased said that his father had taken a loan of Rs 3 lakh from a commission agent but due to high rate of interest the amount swelled to Rs 15 lakh.
