A 50-year-old farmer has allegedly committed suicide by hanging as he was unable to repay debt in Kerala's Alappuzha district.

The farmer, Phalgunan, last evening hanged himself from a tree near his house at Varanad here as he failed to repay the loan taken from a bank for the higher education of his daughter, police said.

Phalgunan had borrowed Rs one lakh from a nationalised bank some time ago and the amount had now accumulated to Rs 1,60,000 as he did not pay any installment, they said.

He had been depressed for the last few days as he had received a recovery notice from the bank to repay the amount, police said.

Phalgunan is survived by wife and a daughter.

A case has been registered in this connection, police said.
