Providing security is the work of the Home ministry, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said today, responding to reports regarding curtailment of vehicles in his cavalcade.

"To decide on the security is the work of the Home department," he told reporters here.

"We have reduced the number of vehicles in the cavalcade," Akhilesh said, adding while deciding on such matters the security of the people should also be taken into consideration.

The number of vehicles in his cavalcade has been reduced from ten to four and traffic restrictions have not been imposed during his movements in the city for the past few days.

Asked about the manhandling of toll plaza staffers allegedly by Samajawadi Party leaders and supporters in Faizabad, Auraiya and Kanpur, Akhilesh said action had been taken.

A gunner had been suspended and two persons arrested in connection with the incidents, he said.

On the proposed hike in power tariff in the state, the Chief Minister evaded a direct reply and merely said it was government's endeavour to supply electricity to villages and industries.

The Power department had incurred a loss of Rs 35,000 crore during the previous regime, he said, adding no bank was ready to give loan for electrification.
