Two out of three class V students are not able to read the text books of class II, while there has been an 8.7 per cent drop in the number of class V students who are able to do division, a survey has found.
The Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) Jammu and Kashmir - Rural - 2011, which was released yesterday at the University of Kashmir, has found that there has also been a "decline in the learning levels" of children in language with only 36 per cent children in class V able to read Class II texts.
The report has revealed that only 22.5 per cent of children were able to do division of numbers in class V.
Conducted every year since 2005, ASER is the largest annual survey of children in rural India done by local organisations and academic institutions.
In Jammu and Kashmir, ASER 2011 covered 14 districts, 375 villages, 8088 households and reached out to 16909 children, a university spokesman said.
The report revealed that Jammu and Kashmir has high enrolment levels with 98 per cent children in the age group of 6 to 14 years enrolled in schools.
Out of these, 59.4 per cent children are enrolled in government schools, whereas 37.7 per cent children are studying in private schools, the survey revealed. (More)
