A decomposed body of a girl was found by the police in the fields at a village in Murshidabad district today, which villagers alleged as a case of rape and murder.

The girl, a class 10 student and a resident of Sonadanga village in the Ranitala police station area, had been missing since June 11, the police said.

Asked if it was a case of rape and murder as alleged by the residents of Sonadanga village, the police said it would be confirmed only after the post-mortem report was received.

West Bengal was recently rocked by a spate of incidents of torture against girls.

On June 7, a college girl was raped and murdered at Barasat in North 24-Parganas district followed by the discovery of a mutilated body of a girl on June 11 at Gede in Nadia district.

Still, another mutilated body of a girl was found yesterday by the police in jute fields at Gaighata in North 24-Parganas district.
