A case has been registered against unknown persons for allegedly posting a defamatory message against a community on a social networking site in Khayali town of the district today.

Muzaffarnagar and its neighbouring districts of west UP are considered communally sensitive and the district had witnessed a large scale riot in 2013. At least 62 people had lost their lives in the clashes between the two communities and hundreds were rendered homeless.

Deputy Superintendent of Police DK Mittal said that police have registered the case under Section 295 of IPC (Deliberate and malicious acts, intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs).

He said that the mobile number from which the message was uploaded has been traced and arrest will be made soon.
