The Madras High Court today made it clear that unless the deficiencies pointed out by District Legal Services Authorities and the Court appointed- Commissioner in women prisons were rectified within four weeks, the Inspector General of Prisons/ADGP Prisons "shall remain present in the court" on July 16.
The first bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice T.S. Sivagnanam, perused the report submitted by the Member Secretary, Tamil Nadu State Legal Services Authority, and the response of the Court-appointed Commissioner Sudha Ramalingam to the report.
It then recorded the submission of the Government Pleader S T S Moorthy that some reasonable period may be granted for rectification of the deficiencies pointed by TNSLA.

Earlier, the court, reacting to writ petitions seeking a direction to authorities to forthwith implement the recommendations of the Board of Visitors, constituted on the report of All India Committee on Prison Reforms, had directed the State Legal Authority to inspect all the women jails and submit a report.
TNSLA, through District Legal Services Authorities, inspected the jails at Tiruvarur, Tiruchirapalli, Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli and submitted a report.
In the report, several deficiencies such as not providing toilets were mentioned.
