Alleging that garbage dumped along roadsides in the city had become breeding grounds for mosquitoes, the Congress today asked its members in Dehradun Municipal Corporation to launch a stir against Mayor Vinod Chamoli for what it said doing nothing for their disposal.

"The city looks ugly with heaps of garbage dumped along its main streets. Besides filling the air with stench, these have become breeding grounds for mosquitoes posing a threat of vector borne diseases.

"The Congress members in the Corporation have been asked to launch a stir against the Mayor who is doing nothing for their removal," Pradesh Congress Vice President Suryakant Dhasmana said.

Alleging the Corporation had become virtually defunct under Chamoli's leadership, he said even the Doon Valley Waste Management, which was being paid Rs 40 to 50 lakh every month to collect garbage from households and business stablishments, was not doing its job.

Dhasmana threatened to hit the streets along with his supporters if the situation did not improve in the next couple of days.
