Delayed monsoon extends hot spell in Northern region

The national capital recorded the maximum day temperature at 43.5 degree Celsius, six notches above normal, as authorities today ordered extension of the summer vacation of all city schools by one week.

All schools, including government, private-run and those under civic bodies, which were to reopen tomorrow after the summer vacation, have been told to extend the vacation till July 8.

The minimum in Delhi stayed four notches above normal to settle at 31.4 degrees Celsius, the Met office said.

Uttar Pradesh continued to bear the brunt of searing heat with Allahabad recording the highest at 45.1 deg C.

The temperature was largely above normal in Varanasi, Allahabad, Kanpur, Moradabad, Jhansi, and Agra divisions, however, the day temperatures fell in Faizabad division, according to MeT.

 

The desert state of Rajasthan also reeled under intense heat conditions affecting normal life across the state.

Day temperature increased in some parts with Churu being the hottest with 46 degree Celsius followed by Sriganganagar at 45.8 deg C.

The heat wave continued unabated in Punjab and Haryana with the mercury soaring upto eight notches above normal at few places in the two states.

Amritsar recorded a high of 44.5 deg C, eight notches above normal.

Temperature in Hisar settled at a high of 44.1 deg C, five notches above normal. Chandigarh braved a high of 42.5 deg C, seven notches above normal, the maximum temperature at Ambala was 42.1 deg C, seven notches above normal.

The summer vacations in all the schools of Punjab has been extended till July 8 in view of torrid heat conditions.

The Met has forecast rains at isolated places in the region during the next 24 hours.
