In a massive crackdown against traffic violators in the national capital, an average of around 500 motorists were challaned by the police every day since January 1 for driving on the wrongside.
"Between January 1 and 20, around 10,000 persons have been challaned for driving in the wrong direction (against the traffic flow)," Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Muktesh Chander said.
In accordance with High Court's order regarding zero tolerance against such traffic violation, particularly in 14 congested corridors in the city, police personnel were directed to take immediate action against the violators, said Chander.
"All DCPs, ACPs, and Inspectors of Delhi Traffic Police have been directed to brief their staff accordingly and take immediate necessary action against the motorists found plying on the wrong carriageway," Chander said.
In reference to the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, those found guilty of driving their vehicles in the wrong direction will be booked under Section 184 of the Act which provides for a penalty of Rs 1,000, besides challaning under Rule 17 (i and ii) of Rules of Road Regulations, 1989.
While in extreme cases, the violator can be booked under section 279 of IPC (Rash and Negligent Act) which may lead to his arrest and seizure of vehicle.
